Summary

The author of the New York Times bestseller Her Becoming Meryl Streep returns with a lively history of the Academy Awards, focusing on the brutal battles, the starry rivalries, and the colorful behind-the-scenes drama。

America does not have royalty。 It has the Academy Awards。 For nine decades, perfectly coiffed starlets, debonair leading men, and producers with gold in their eyes have chased the elusive Oscar。 What began as an industry banquet in 1929 has now exploded into a hallowed ceremony, complete with red carpets, envelopes, and little gold men。 But don't be fooled by the the Oscars, more than anything, are a battlefield, where the history of Hollywood--and of America itself--unfolds in dramas large and small。 The road to the Oscars may be golden, but it's paved in blood, sweat, and broken hearts。

In Oscar Wars, Michael Schulman chronicles the remarkable, sprawling history of the Academy Awards and the personal dramas--some iconic, others never-before-revealed--that have played out on the stage and off camera。 Unlike other books on the subject, each chapter takes a deep dive into a particular year, conflict, or even category that tells a larger story of cultural change, from Louis B。 Mayer to Moonlight。 Schulman examines how the red carpet runs through contested turf, and the victors aren't always as clear as the names drawn from envelopes。 Caught in the crossfire are their thwarted ambitions, their artistic epiphanies, their messy collaborations, their dreams fulfilled or dashed。

Featuring a star-studded cast of some of the most powerful Hollywood players of today and yesterday, as well as outsiders who stormed the palace gates, this captivating history is a collection of revelatory tales, each representing a turning point for the Academy, for the movies, or for the culture at large。

IOscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears by Michael Schulman nteresting but at times too subjective in my opinion。 And I cannot believe there was barely a mention of the Lord of the Rings trilogy。 Literally, barely a mention。

Packed full of great stories; just academic enough to be taken seriously, and just juicy enough to be great fun。 It ends with Will Smith; as long as there are Oscars, there will be stories to tell。

Y’all I’m a sucker for film history and a sucker for the Oscars。 I love the glitz and the drama and I absolutely refuse to watch any of the movies because I don’t have the attention span。 But I absolutely must have the knowledge!Well written, well researched but felt flat for me just because these topics are so big and widespread, I would have read books just on the 70s, postwar era, etc。 I also think like the book started stronger than it ended。 The chapter on Bette Davis and Orion Welles(Chapt Y’all I’m a sucker for film history and a sucker for the Oscars。 I love the glitz and the drama and I absolutely refuse to watch any of the movies because I don’t have the attention span。 But I absolutely must have the knowledge!Well written, well researched but felt flat for me just because these topics are so big and widespread, I would have read books just on the 70s, postwar era, etc。 I also think like the book started stronger than it ended。 The chapter on Bette Davis and Orion Welles(Chapter 2) was very good as was the chapter on the blacklisted screen writers (chapter 5) I really liked the chapter on New Hollywood just because I’m obsessed with the making of, “One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest” (Chapter 7) The last few chapters felt like the author was trying to pull too many threads together。 Maybe it was because I have living memory of these Oscars?Really liked the format of full essays in each era。If you liked this book I cannot recommend the video essays on best actress winners and other film related subjects from Be Kind Rewind on YouTube。 。。。more

I love me some Oscars! This book was terrific, and gave some great history and insight into the Oscars and to films from the early 1900s to present。 From Hattie McDaniel’s history making win, to “envelope-gate” where La La Land was mistakenly announced as Best Picture winner over Moonlight。 The fake history of the “red scare” in Hollywood and who it pushed out because of。 While the book is rather larger, it felt like such a quick read!

Oscars night was always sacred in our house when I was growing up。 My memories of watching the show go back to the late 1960s。 As a pre-teen, I was allowed to stay up late ON A SCHOOL NIGHT to watch with my mother。 (I haven't missed an Oscars ceremony since then。) In the early 1970s, in my pre-teens, I found a paperback book (at my grandmother's local drugstore in smalltown Minnesota) that had pictures and profiles of ALL the major Oscar winners (plus lists of all the nominees & other winners), Oscars night was always sacred in our house when I was growing up。 My memories of watching the show go back to the late 1960s。 As a pre-teen, I was allowed to stay up late ON A SCHOOL NIGHT to watch with my mother。 (I haven't missed an Oscars ceremony since then。) In the early 1970s, in my pre-teens, I found a paperback book (at my grandmother's local drugstore in smalltown Minnesota) that had pictures and profiles of ALL the major Oscar winners (plus lists of all the nominees & other winners), dating back to the very beginning of the awards。 Some kids memorized the "Guinness Book of World Records" -- I had my Oscars book。 I read and re-read and referenced it so much that my copy eventually fell apart and had to be held together with rubber bands (it may still be lurking somewhere in my parents' basement)。 I've bought and read many books about the Oscars and their history in the years since then, and when I heard about "Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears" by Michael Schulman, I knew I had to add it to my collection。 I downloaded an e-copy the day it became available, with the goal of getting through it before this year's Oscars show。 It's a long book (the hardcover edition is 608 pages), and it took longer to get through than I thought it would -- but it's also well written and highly entertaining。 "Oscar Wars" is not an exhaustive year-by-year history of the awards。 It does, however, cover the near-century of their existence in 11 chapters, each one focused on a particularly theme or contest or year/period through a few, well-chosen, representative stories -- some I'd never heard before, or had, at least, forgotten -- that tell a larger story about the Oscars, about Hollywood and the movie industry, and about America。 We learn about (among many other things) how the awards were created and the early struggle between the studio moguls and the unions and guilds to control them; the McCarthy era and the blacklist; how Hollywood and the Oscars were forced to adapt to the social changes of the 1960s and 70s; how the 1989 "Snow White" fiasco unfolded (and how that particular show nevertheless led to some lasting changes); the painfully slow progress toward diversity, as personified by the stories of Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Poitier and Halle Berry, as well as the #oscarssowhite years; and the rise and fall of Harvey Weinstein。 If you enjoy movies and the Oscars as much as I do, you will enjoy this book。 And if you don't know a lot about the history of the Oscars, this might be a good volume to whet your appetite for more。 4。5 stars, rounded down to 4。 。。。more

I received an electronic advanced reader's copy of this book from NetGalley。 For many years, I was *obsessed* with the Oscars and everything surrounding them。 While that's died down a bit, I was really excited to read this book。 I thought the way Schulman structured it, focusing on important years or time periods rather than trying to give a complete history of the Academy and the Oscars from their creation to now, was really smart。 There were some things here that will be familiar to Oscar fans I received an electronic advanced reader's copy of this book from NetGalley。 For many years, I was *obsessed* with the Oscars and everything surrounding them。 While that's died down a bit, I was really excited to read this book。 I thought the way Schulman structured it, focusing on important years or time periods rather than trying to give a complete history of the Academy and the Oscars from their creation to now, was really smart。 There were some things here that will be familiar to Oscar fans - there's not much new in the chapter about Harvey Weinstein's escalation of advertising and spending and the battle between Shakespeare in Love and Saving Private Ryan, for example。 But there's still plenty hear to engage even die-hards。 I found the chapter on the blacklist years and their impact on screenwriting awards especially fascinating, and I loved the chapter that connected Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Poitier, and Halle Berry。 I would definitely recommend this to any movie fan! 。。。more

3。5 stars。 I didn't get really interested in this until about halfway through, when we reached the 1970's。 It had a lot of fun trivia, but I found it disconcerting that Schulman would matter-of-factly divulge details of antisemitism and misogyny/borderline sexual assault in early Hollywood without comment。 3。5 stars。 I didn't get really interested in this until about halfway through, when we reached the 1970's。 It had a lot of fun trivia, but I found it disconcerting that Schulman would matter-of-factly divulge details of antisemitism and misogyny/borderline sexual assault in early Hollywood without comment。 。。。more

If there’s anything I love almost as much as books, it’s The Oscars。 When I was younger, Oscar night was something I looked forward to every year。 My mom and I would get appetizers, watch the red carpet with Joan Rivers, critique the best and worst looks of the night, fill out our ballots, and anxiously await every “and the Oscar goes to…” This book is not only full of Academy Award history from its creation to the present, but it also discusses how movies were made, fought over, and ultimately If there’s anything I love almost as much as books, it’s The Oscars。 When I was younger, Oscar night was something I looked forward to every year。 My mom and I would get appetizers, watch the red carpet with Joan Rivers, critique the best and worst looks of the night, fill out our ballots, and anxiously await every “and the Oscar goes to…” This book is not only full of Academy Award history from its creation to the present, but it also discusses how movies were made, fought over, and ultimately chosen as Best Picture winners (some of which I disagree with)。 I loved reading about Halle Berry’s 2002 Oscar- being the first black woman to receive the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, about how Saving Private Ryan was robbed of Beat Picture thanks to likes of scumbag and POS Harvey Weinstein, how Bette Davis ruled over the big screen until she was no longer relevant, and all of the other little parts of Hollywood that aren’t always known。 I also now have a long list of movies to watch and rewatch thanks to this book that makes you fall in love with the movies all over again。 。。。more

Every so often, a book is published that seems like it was written for me, personally。 This is one。 Yes, I knew most of the information contained in the book because I have read and own many of the books in his extensive list of referenced works。 I mean, I have been an Oscars obsessive since my first Academy Awards telecast in 1969, when I was ten。 But it is Schulman's breezy tone and insight that makes this an exceptional read。 I highly recommend it to all film lovers。 Every so often, a book is published that seems like it was written for me, personally。 This is one。 Yes, I knew most of the information contained in the book because I have read and own many of the books in his extensive list of referenced works。 I mean, I have been an Oscars obsessive since my first Academy Awards telecast in 1969, when I was ten。 But it is Schulman's breezy tone and insight that makes this an exceptional read。 I highly recommend it to all film lovers。 。。。more

Simply one of the best pop culture books I’ve ever read。 Fun, funny, and fascinating。 The author writes about his subjects with an alternatively playful reverence and scholarly seriousness, and both modes are a joy to read。 Can’t recommend it enough to anyone who loves reading about pop culture and movies, the personalities that make them, and the larger sociopolitical developments that they both influence and reflect。

Michael Schulman ("Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep") offers a tasty overview of the Academy Awards, namely the scandals, upsets, wrong decisions and juicy gossip。 Unlike Mason Wiley and Damien Bona's "Inside Oscar," which devoted a chapter to each year's Oscar ceremonies, Schulman's massive (600+ pages) Oscar Wars is more selective, and its chapters are organized by topics, such as "Tokens," which discusses how Oscar wins for Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Poitier and Halle Berry broke the Oscar color Michael Schulman ("Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep") offers a tasty overview of the Academy Awards, namely the scandals, upsets, wrong decisions and juicy gossip。 Unlike Mason Wiley and Damien Bona's "Inside Oscar," which devoted a chapter to each year's Oscar ceremonies, Schulman's massive (600+ pages) Oscar Wars is more selective, and its chapters are organized by topics, such as "Tokens," which discusses how Oscar wins for Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Poitier and Halle Berry broke the Oscar color barriers in 1940, 1964 and 2002。Individual chapter topics also include the Hollywood blacklist period; why Citizen Kane won only one Oscar out of its nine nominations; and how Bette Davis in ALL ABOUT EVE and Gloria Swanson in SUNSET BOULEVARD lost the 1951 Best Actress Oscar to Judy Holliday in BORN YESTERDAY。 One of the funniest chapters covers caftan-loving "Glittermeister" Allan Carr's production of the 1989 awards show, the camp-fest that resulted in the Academy issuing a public apology。 In the final chapters, Schulman deftly covers recent gaffes, such as when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were handed the wrong envelope in 2017 and LA LA LAND was announced as Best Picture, only to have the Oscar stage managers leap into action to reveal that the winner was actually MOONLIGHT。 He also dissects Harvey Weinstein's award show tactics and how SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE won the Best Picture Oscar over SAVING PRIVATE RYAN。 The book ends with Schulman's firsthand account from the Dolby Theatre's mezzanine of the live 2022 ceremony when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock。 Film buffs will savor this tantalizing and gossip-filled overview of the Academy Awards。 。。。more
